What it means to think logically (English)

Ah, sorry I didn't upload my blog for a while. I was kinda busy, you know, with my circle and stuff. I was mentally ill for a moment, but now I am back! By the way, the orange juice I bought from Don Quixote (actually, the proper name might be donkihote, but I personally don't care) is so delicious I'm literally crying ;(

Some of my readers know that I joined the English debate squad in my university. I have a lot of friends and seniors that teach me how to think critically when I am debating. One of the coaches there taught us how to make an explanation that is perfectly logical. He asked, "Why do we punish people?"

Well, one of my colleagues answered, "To hope that they will be a better person." However, this is actually incorrect because it mentions about the future of the punishment, or the consequence to put it short, not the reason why we punish them.

The actual answer was "Because they did something wrong"

I scratched my head, thinking it's too simple of an answer. After the lecture, I went up to the coach and questioned why the answer was that easy. He chuckled and said, "Logic is that simple. You don't have to twist your head to come up with an explanation!"

I see. We always think of debate as a sophisticated, complicated quarrel. Actually, it's not that horrible. I always have trouble reasoning my argument, confusing the judge, the opponents, and the peers. I must practice harder and be a good debater...
